Robert Redford, the strawberry-haired ‘70s heartthrob whose influence in Hollywood extended far beyond the screen, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 89.

In a statement to USA TODAY, his rep, Cindi Berger, said that Redford had died at his Sundance home in the mountains of Utah, “the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.” In later years, Sundance was synonymous with Redford’s brand, after the film festival he named for the place became one of the most prestigious in the business.

“He will be missed greatly,” Berger continued. “The family requests privacy.”

Redford is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, 68, whom he wed in 2009. Szaggars, a native of Germany, is a multimedia environmental artist whose work has been showcased across the globe. Working with both oil paintings and performance art, her pieces are aimed at protecting and honoring the earth.

Redford, too, was a public environmentalist, using his star power to advocate for conservation and speak out against climate change.

Redford is also survived by two children, whom he shares with ex-wife and fellow activist Lola Van Wagenen, 86. The pair had four kids: Scott, Shauna, James and Amy Redford; however, Scott died shortly after his birth from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), while James died in 2020 from a disease affecting the liver.

In an interview with Esquire in 2017, Redford called Scott’s death “traumatic” and implied that it had remained an invisible force in his life in ways he wasn’t always able to identify.

“We had to deal with it. You have to move on,” he told the outlet. “And we had other children who came. But something like that doesn’t get completely dismissed. It probably shows up in various small ways you’re not even aware of. I’m sure there’s a lot of this stuff that’s subconscious. But it’s pretty traumatic when it happens, particularly when you’re that young. You’re not equipped to deal with it.”

James, an environmentalist and documentarian following in his father’s footsteps, died at 58 of primary sclerosing cholangitis, a disease that scars the bile ducts and damages the liver. He and his father co-founded the Redford Institute in 2005, which focused on environmental issues.

Redford’s two surviving children, Shauna Redford, 64, and Amy Redford, 54, have also found ways to incorporate their father’s legacy, with the latter pursuing a career in acting and the former becoming an artist.
