Mark Harmon’s Gibbs Is Shot in ‘NCIS: Origins’ Premiere Sneak Peek: Who’s Next?
Wait, what?! That’s the only reaction we have after watching TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek at Mark Harmon‘s Gibbs in the NCIS: Origins Season 3 premiere, airing on Tuesday, October 6.
We’ll be seeing the present-day Gibbs in all 10 episodes of the prequel’s third season, and he’ll be saying goodbye to that peaceful life he’s been enjoying in Alaska ever since he left D.C. behind in NCIS Season 19. It’s tied to a mystery connecting back to his ’90s days at Camp Pendleton (when he’s played by Austin Stowell), and it was the “good idea” of the story that made Harmon say yes, he told us in our in-depth digital cover story. It begins in the present with ghosts from his past shattering that retirement, with his dog from the crossover with the mothership last season still by his side. In fact, that’s exactly what we see in our first-look clip.
As it begins, Gibbs calls to the dog, checks his paw for something, then sends him inside for lunch. But that’s when Gibbs hears a noise and is instantly alert. He looks around, then he’s suddenly shot in the chest?! He goes down and sees two men approaching, then closes his eyes. One checks his pulse. “One down, one to go,” he says. Watch the full clip above for more, including Harmon’s telling voiceover.

First of all, we know Gibbs doesn’t die since he’s in subsequent episodes, visits Woody (Bobby Moynihan, in aged-up makeup) in Episode 2, and returns to the NCIS office … right? Unless Origins is taking a page from the mothership’s book when Vance (Rocky Carroll) was killed off in Episode 500.
So, who’s targeted Gibbs? And just as intriguing: Who’s the “one to go”? Could it be Lala (Mariel Molino) or Randy (Caleb Foote), characters we have yet to see in the present and whose fates are unknown? Gibbs is going to see Woody, and we know this is connected to Randy’s kidnapping. Could it be because he knows where to find the other person because it’s someone they both know? Could this lead to a crossover with NCIS and involve one of Gibbs’ former team, Tony (Michael Weatherly), back in DC to open up a satellite office of his new security firm, or McGee (Sean Murray), still on the team but now senior field agent?
“There’s a serialized story that we’ll see in 1992, 1993, and it’s directly impacting what we’re seeing with Mark in present day. This is one of the most epic adventures that Mark’s Gibbs has ever been on. It’s full of twists and turns,” showrunner David J. North told us. (Just look at this clip!). “It’s seeing Gibbs in a way that we’ve never seen him before.”
He also cautioned that Gibbs leaving behind the life he’s built wasn’t something that was done lightly. “He’s at peace in Alaska. That was one thing that Mark and I always agreed on: Alaska is the place he wanted to be. And so for him to leave, something really big must have happened,” the EP teased. Again, just look at this clip!
