Charlie Kirk shot in the neck during Utah student rally — Trump, lawmakers call for prayers

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck Wednesday afternoon while addressing a packed rally at Utah Valley University in Orem, sparking panic and chaos on campus.

The Shooting

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was speaking to students during the kickoff of his Great American Comeback Tour when a gunshot rang out.

Disturbing footage from inside the venue shows Kirk flinch violently before snapping back violently before falling into his chair, with blood visible from his neck. Students screamed and scrambled for safety as bystanders rushed toward the stage.

Witnesses said the shot came just minutes after Kirk had been tossing hats into the cheering crowd.

“People were there. And there were lots of them. You know, he came out, he was throwing hats, riling up the crowd,” former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was in attendance, told Fox News.

Suspect in Custody — But Confusion Remains

Campus officials confirmed a shot was fired toward the stage. An alert sent to students said a suspect was in custody, and footage appeared to show officers leading away an older man in handcuffs.

But in a conflicting account, a UVU spokesperson later told international outlets that no suspect was officially in custody, highlighting uncertainty over the situation.

Kirk’s current condition remains unclear. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Leaders React

The shooting drew immediate national attention, with figures across the political spectrum condemning the attack and calling for prayers.

  • President Donald Trump: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”
  • Vice President JD Vance: “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
  • Utah Senator Mike Lee: “Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there.”
  • Candace Owens: “Everyone please stop what you are doing and pray for Charlie Kirk. Please.”
  • Governor Gavin Newsom of California, a Democrat: “The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form.”

A Tour Cut Short

Just minutes before the shooting, Kirk posted a triumphant message on X: “WE. ARE. SO. BACK. Utah Valley University is FIRED UP and READY for the first stop back on the American Comeback Tour.”

Now, that tour lies in uncertainty as his family, supporters, and political allies wait for updates on his condition.

Kirk, a husband and father of two, built Turning Point USA into a nationwide conservative youth movement. His appearance in Utah had already sparked controversy, with 7,000 people signing a petition to block him from speaking on campus.

Tonight, the nation waits for answers — and prays for Charlie Kirk’s survival.
